Hi All,

I'm looking to create a course in my field (I'll keep that anon for now) and I feel like I know enough to be of some use, but here are some of the thoughts i've been having:

  1. There already are several courses that people can take on Udemy, Linked-In Learning and some independent platforms that are doing a pretty decent job of covering this topic.
  2. I've got some accreditations, but not entirely as many as the people teaching the same topic as mentioned above.
  3. Out of 10, I'm probably a 6 or a 6.5 in terms of competency, why wouldn't people just gravitate towards the options that already exist?

Essentially, my question is : How did you get over YOUR imposter syndrome?

Thanks!

Hey Amoo!

These are great questions!

  1. People take courses to get a specific result. In our opinion, Udemy and LinkedIn courses aren't much better than a playlist of content on youtube. Where your course has additional value is the unique message and experiences you have to share. Even if others are teaching similar content, no one has had your exact experiences and so your product will be unique. In addition to that, the personal guidance, reviewing content, interacting with students, and providing a community to your students are extremely valuable. It is these things that both allow you to charge much more than Udemy or LinkedIn, and have the advantage of providing more to your students.
  2. Accreditations don't matter if you can get the person you are teaching to the result they want! As long as you can do that you are set. As the founder of Heights, despite building a learning platform, I never went to college. That didn't stop me from building a product that helps thousands of creators run their learning businesses, and it shouldn't stop you either.
  3. As long as you are one step above the person you are teaching, you can help them, and you are often in a better position to help them if that is the case. If the top expert in the world was forced to teach a beginning, they might have a tougher time because they have forgotten all the questions and problems they faced early on, where in your case, this will be more fresh in your mind.

For me personally, just do it, keep building and improving. The more you build and grow, the more confident you will become. And remember that we are all figuring this out as we go.

Happy Holidays!
